Leap Second Tacked Onto 2008

The International Earth Rotation and Reference Systems Service has decided to add an additional second to the clock for 2008 based on its monitoring of the Earth’s rotation.  The additional second will be added at 23:59:59 GMT in order to keep UTC in sync with the position of the sun above the Earth.  This is the 24th second to be added to UTC since 1972, when the practice began.

Top Gear: Vietnam Special

Top Gear S12E08 - Vietnam Special

Top Gear s12e08 - Vietnam Special

On Dec 28, 2008 Top Gear’s eighth episode of season twelve (s12e08) aired.  This time Jeremy, James and Richard were givenmillions of Dong (Vietnamese currency) to buy vehicles and “do something that the Americans never could” – get from one end of Vietnam to the other.  Unfortunately the exchange rate for Dong to Dollars isn’t quite what they’d hoped so they wind up on two wheels instead of four.  Jeremy’s vintage Vespa (like most Vietbodges) continually breaks down and must be repaired using local parts and man power.  There are some great scenes of scooters in general and it really gives some insight into the hard lives that the Vietnamese scooters have lived and the questionable repair tactics used to keep them on the road.

Leatherman Keyman

Shadeone  over at the EDC Forums came up with a really outstanding idea.  He’s modified a small Leatherman Micra so that it can hold a spare set of keys.  The idea is basically to disassemble a Micra, grind down your spare keys to similar dimensions of the tools that came out of the Micra and reassemble.
